Mark Saiger, owner of Saiger's Steam Clean, puts it plainly: "With acetone you risk delaminating the carpet, and it can potentially even damage your carpet cleaning machine."
The milder solvent is not automatically safer. NIOSH's Pocket Guide gives acetone a boiling point of 133°F and a vapor pressure of 180 mmHg; ethyl acetate, the base of most non-acetone removers, boils at 171°F at 73 mmHg. It stays wet in the pile longer, which is when it reaches the backing.
The procedure, step by step
