Those three figures are essie's own, published in the brand's FAQ. ASTM D1640/D1640M is the test method the coatings industry uses to time exactly this, and it does not report drying as a single number. It separates set-to-touch, where the film is still tacky but nothing lifts off on a finger; tack-free; dry-hard; and dry-through, meaning the film has cured across its full thickness rather than only at the surface. It is a finger-pressure test and openly subjective; labs wanting something firmer run ASTM D5895 and a mechanical recorder.
Nail polish is a nitrocellulose lacquer and behaves like one. Solvent at the surface leaves first, so a skin forms over a layer that is still liquid underneath. That is why essie can print 30 to 60 seconds and two to three hours in the same FAQ without contradicting itself. The first number is set-to-touch. The second is dry-through. Most arguments about whether a polish "really" dries in a minute are two people quoting different stages at each other.
What the 60 seconds on the front label is measuring
Sally Hansen sells Insta-Dri on one figure: apply a single coat to clean, dry nails, allow 60 seconds, done. The formula carries base and top coat in the same bottle, which is what makes the claim possible. One film does the work of four.
The condition attached to a number like that is public, though it lives in the patent literature rather than on the shelf. US Patent 5,639,447, "Quick-drying nail polish," granted to Mycone Dental Corp in 1997, specifies a hardened coating thickness of 0.0001 to 0.0005 inch, preferably about 0.0001 inch, which is roughly 2.5 to 12.7 microns dry with a preferred target near 2.5. Its worked examples dried in 61 to 69 seconds, applied as a 0.0001-inch film at 77°F and about 50 percent relative humidity.
Read that as an instruction rather than a boast. A one-minute polish is one at two and a half microns, at 77°F, at half humidity. Lay down twice that thickness and you double the distance every solvent molecule must travel. Nothing on the front of the bottle names those conditions, and thickness is the one home users break constantly.
How long to wait between coats
One to two minutes. OPI's professional Infinite Shine directions run four lacquer coats, gel-like base, two colors, gel-like top, capping the free edge each time, with 1 to 2 minutes of drying after each of the first three. essie's FAQ says to allow each coat 30 to 60 seconds; essie's own application guide, on a different page of the same site, says two minutes. One brand, two published intervals, and the difference decides whether the manicure survives the night.
Take the longer figure. A fresh coat of nitrocellulose lacquer partially redissolves the one beneath it, which is how the layers fuse into a single film instead of stacking as separate sheets. That helps once the lower coat has released most of its solvent and hurts before it has: the softened layer drags under the brush and streaks, or it traps solvent and dents an hour later, long after the surface felt safe.
Until early 2024 I told shoppers that a quick-dry top coat or a bottle of drying drops was a free upgrade on any lacquer, because that is how the fixtures are built. The drops sit at the end cap beside every color, and the adjacency reads as a recommendation. I stopped once I began matching those pairings against the back-label directions of the products beside them. OPI's Infinite Shine instructions say to avoid RapiDry Nail Polish Dryer and DripDry Drops on that lacquer, because they cause wrinkling. Those numbers are not portable, and both brands say so. CND's education line states that no cure time can be given for lamps other than its own, which have not been tested with the product. Gelish's times assume a 36-watt lamp and instruct you to lengthen the cure otherwise. Gel polymerizes because photoinitiators absorb a specific band of wavelengths, so a lamp with plenty of watts in the wrong band leaves the underside of the film liquid while the top looks glossy.
I got this wrong in print. I wrote a shelf-talker line for an at-home gel end cap reading "cures in 30 seconds in any 36W LED lamp." Wattage looked like the honest comparable number, and since Gelish does key its 30-second cure to a 36-watt lamp, the sentence felt sourced. It shipped to every store in the chain. Watts describe how much electricity a lamp draws, never where its output sits on the spectrum, and CND's refusal to publish times for third-party lamps says the same thing. Curing also ends the wait outright; no solvent remains to leave, so a correctly cured set is hard the moment the lamp switches off. The tacky film some top coats leave is an inhibition layer, wiped off with 99 percent isopropyl alcohol, and not wet polish.

What is actually known about the lamp
The band is narrow and published. The 2023 Nature Communications paper by Zhivagui and colleagues puts nail curing devices at 340 to 395 nanometers. A 2021 study by Ford and colleagues in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology measured eight devices sold in Australia and found UVA, the 315 to 400 nanometer band, dominant in all eight at 39.0 to 184.9 watts per square meter, with no UVC and trace UVB only from the single compact-fluorescent unit. It put maximum permissible occupational exposure per device at 38 to 197 minutes, against manufacturer cycles of 30 to 150 seconds.
Run the arithmetic on a full Shellac set in a CND LED lamp: 10 seconds of base, 60 for each of two color coats, 60 for top coat, about 190 seconds per hand. The FDA's consumer update "How to Safely Use Nail Care Products" calls nail curing lamps low risk when used as directed, citing a 2013 study in which even the worst-case lamp needed 36 minutes of daily exposure to reach occupational UV limits, and it recommends no more than 10 minutes per hand per session.
Zhivagui's team is why nobody treats that as closed. Keratinocytes and fibroblasts given a single 20-minute session showed 20 to 30 percent cell death; three consecutive 20-minute exposures killed 65 to 70 percent, with mitochondrial and DNA damage and mutation patterns of the kind seen in human melanoma. Twenty minutes is roughly six times a full Shellac cure, and these were cells in a dish rather than hands. Their own paper says further study is needed before anyone quantifies a human cancer risk.
I cannot tell you what a decade of gel manicures does to the backs of your hands. I read shelves and printed directions. I have not followed anyone's skin for ten years, and the paper everyone quotes ends by calling the human risk unquantified. What I can vouch for is packaging. The nail plate is not a waterproof lid. Walters and Flynn's 1983 permeability work, still the reference, found the nail behaving as a hydrophilic gel membrane rather than a lipid barrier. Its lipid content sits around 0.1 to 1 percent, ten times lower than the stratum corneum, and once thickness is accounted for, water crosses it about ten times faster than skin. A hot shower drives water into the plate, the plate swells, and the film on top must stretch with it or let go. Inside two hours it has not finished hardening, so it lets go at the edges, and the chip you see three days later started there.
Warm, wet air causes a second problem, and it answers the question about blowing on your nails. Furniture finishers reckon that evaporating solvent cools the surface beneath it by as much as twenty degrees Fahrenheit, enough to drop a film below the dew point. Water then condenses into the lacquer and sits there as a milky haze called blushing, which is why finishers will not spray lacquer above roughly 65 percent relative humidity. Exhaled breath is near body temperature and close to saturated. Blowing aims a small humidifier at a film that is already cold.
The strongest case against everything above is that most people do not need it. "Wait two hours before doing anything that presses on a nail" rescues most home manicures, and a shopper handed a micron figure and a four-stage drying scale before opening the bottle is likelier to give up than to improve. I grant that. The detail earns its place when something fails, because the failure is almost always one of four nameable things: a coat thicker than the label assumes, a second coat over a first that was still soft, a lamp the polish was never tested against, or hot water inside two hours. Each has a fix, and none is a faster polish.
